Better late than never. Last week saw some awesome waves light up JBay for the Corona Open, which was done and dusted chop chop. Toledo looked like the form horse from the get-go and didn't disappoint. The world's top female surfers return to JBay for the first time in almost 20 years. None of the women currently on Tour have ever competed at J-Bay during a Championship Tour (CT) event and, prior to this week, a number of them had never been to South Africa. The comp should wrap up at the end of this week. It wasn't only the world famous rights that were firing. PE had waves, and so did the end of the road. Winter at least decided to show it's face. The shark spotters were active at this years event, with a light aircraft added to the mix. You just had to be careful not to get too much height on your airs else you mighta been T-boned by it. The adage goes that the sharks you see aren't the one's you have to worry about. Hopefully Mike Hill spotted this one whilst noseriding down the point, cos that would have put it into the "ain't gonna bite you" category. Stoked to have met the King! So privileged to have attended a small private function where legend Shaun Tomson interviewed 11x World Champ Kelly Slater . Absolutely fascinating to hear these 2 surf geniuses talk. Just blew everyone's mind's to sit and listen to these guys up close and personal. Intelligent, insightful and articulate. They don't make em like that anymore... Gotto love it when non-surfers write about surfing events. The Mango inflight magazine advertising the Corona Jbay Open with a shot of a tropical left. Nup - missing the point ou's. And miss the point even more cos you don't offer a fixed price for boardbags like the other airlines. Bleh. It wouldn't be a winters week in PE without the obligatory sunrise/sunset shots... CarPark John is a bit distracted whilst watching the Corona open JBay 2018 today! Ballie hasn't lost his touch. 10 outta 10 according to his rating scale. Not sure if he was referring to the waves, or the company!? Always fun to find some vintage PE shots, like this poster advertising Humewood beach. Apparently people could walk on water back then. So a good week of surf, action and all sorts. Would be cool if we could just push the re-order button!
