Not a helluva lot of surf during the past week, but lekker weather and bath-tub warm water have meant at least peeps can get wet in baggies and boardies. Jamie Morris has garnered himself a whole new female fan base thanks to some shirt-free board-riding.
Spots starting with "S" seemed to be picking up whatever tiny waves were about. Sards and Seals threw up enough of a lump to get wet on. Some of the JBay lighties went photo-bombing with Zag sharp shooter Greg Chapman (aka Chappypix) over the weekend, and Dylan was boosting all over the place. Perfect weather to de-wax boards as it takes about 30 seconds and you go from a solid gooey mess to a liquid gooey mess. Re-waxing is no problem in the sticky weather if you know a trick or two - just grab a small jug and fill with water and ice-cubes. All you gotto do is keep dipping your bar of wax in the cold water as you wax your board and it goes on in perfect lil bumps instead of a streaky smear. Pour a bit of the cold water onto the deck of your board whilst you wax too, same effect - bumps instead of smears. Sunny skies mean kiff weather to do some street art - and Joff is tackling the skatepark with his spray cans. It's going to look so rad to have it sprayed with some funky artwork instead of Tom, Dick, Harry and Koos tagging their names all over it. Forecast is looking a bit bleak again for the bay this week. Typical PE conundrum - beaut weather = bogger all surf. Just another perfect summer weekend. Sun, surf and good times. Coupla waves about. A few hills bombed. A few Bulls downed. A few rays caught on the sand. Crowd avoidance skills had to be top-notch to avoid the floating obstacles in the line-up. Jacques wasn't so lucky & got a dinged board for his troubles. Better than Ridwaan who bust his board at Fence though.
Feel like winning your very own custom surfboard by legendary Seals shaper Simon Fish aka Fishstix? Course ya do! Then buy yourself a raffle ticket from Faye Zoetmulder for R50. Faye's raising money so she can get on the WQS next year as she doesn't have a sponsor. She's also having a Trivia evening at the Cape St Francis Resort next Saturday - so grab some mates and book a table (R120 pp). Live music, kiff chow and lots of fun. Thoughts and prayers with JBay ripper Matt McGillivray who underwent elective surgery earlier in the week to correct a congenital anomaly of his breastbone. Matts was concave instead of flat, so he had some panel-beating done to sort it out. He'll be out the water for 6 weeks at least. Get better quick kid! Britney is not only a great surfer, but she sure know what to do with a koki pen too. Ok, technically they called Zig Pens, but just fancy koki pens for surfboards and whatever else you want to doodle all over. So look out for Britney & Robyn rocking their custom-koki'd sleds. Sticking with boards - Brad Beck has recycled himself a 70's single fin classic. Reckons it's a heavy bastard, but once it's all sanded down he should be having some summer fun on it. The guys at the CYOH comp had a blast on the Catch Surf boards that Roosta brought down this weekend. They're made out the same stuff as bodyboards, so essentially foamies with class. Most are finless so you can 360 and slide out to your hearts content. Summers here which means long days on the beach - and a long time your cars gonna be in the carpark and available for affirmative shopping. Don't leave your keys on the wheel - grab your self a key lock at Surf Centre. Be safe rather than sorry. New in stock are Gas fins for the Future/Firewire fin systems. Helluva lot cheaper than Future fins themselves - almost half price. Range of thrusters and quads.
Things been pretty slow surf wise in the bay lately. Summer doldrums. Always seems such a waste of kiff days, warm water and long evenings when there's no surf. Here's a few random bits & pieces of whassup in the absence of surf. Anyone who's owned a GoPro knows you take lank selfies by mistake. But Michael Klos is glad he did. Cos he lost his GoPro at Avo's about 3 months ago, and Craig Cuffs daughter found it washed up at Millers after the big east swell - and Craig managed to track Michael by posting the pic up on Facebook and reunited him with his camera!
Been shooting a bit of surf over the last few days, which means in between taking pics of guys on waves there are a few odd other things to click at to pass the time. Here they are. For those in the dark - Die Antwoord is the Saffa equivalent to the bastard love-child between Eminem & Lady Gaga. White Afrikaans rap with a serious freak factor. And the international surfing world is drinking it right in..... Was reading an article in a surf mag about a trip Dane Reynolds, Taylor Knox and Craig Anderson did to Mexico recently. And right there in the first paragraph it's talking about their road trip - and how Taylor Knox is asking Dane about his strange taste in music that is busy blaring out the car's speakers....turns out it's none other than Die Antwoord! Die Antwoord have actually featured a few times in surf vid's; both surf/savant Clay Marzo and mad Matty Wilkenson (Wilko) have used them in their video edits (see below). I can definitely see both Clay & Wilko digging their sound, but gotto say wouldn't have pegged Dane as as ardent fan. Truth is stranger than fiction. Justin Grey, winner of the CYOH Surf Off series for 2012, just got back from his 1st prize trip to Indo thanks to All Aboard Travel.
"Myself and my girlfriend just arrived back from a rad trip to Bali thanks to Cyoh and All Aboard Travel. We were based at a Resort in Balangan, called Flowerbud, surfing Dreamland and travelling around from there. We missioned to Nusa Lemongan and I surfed at Shipwrecks, was good to surf a right after all the lefts! A definite highlight was snorkeling around Manta Point. We also cruised around on a scooter to closer breaks including Uluwatu. Was a really good time of the year - waves were firing almost daily and the crowd was min, basically getting all the sets with a few local guys. All round it was a sick holiday and something my doll and I will always remember + was rad break from work but now I'm already in the thick of things and looking forward to the 4th Quarter of 2013!" Keen on a surf trip? Get in touch with Lorrin at All Aboard Travel and she'll hook you up no probs. Lorrin rocks, and will get you the best deals delivered with great service. Plus she lives at Seals...so support local cos local is lekker! Thursday was a pretty good way to cap off a really fun week of waves. Some 16 sec period swell made it round the corner at Cape Recife and lit up the reefs. As usual, whenever there's good surf, there're also some funny sideshows that go with it, so here goes.... Pretty good run of swell towards the end of last week. Friday was the pick of the bunch with both Millers and Rincon firing. Pick of the bunch was the 1.30-2.30pm slot, and after that things dropped off a bit and slowed down thanks to the big spring high. Nothing like a new board to get you amped. Werner was so stoked with his new fire-engine red Dennis Ellis Boardroom Vetkoek that he paddled it out in 60km/h winds last week in the hope of getting a wave. Luckily the next day the wind dropped off and the swell picked up so he could give it a proper test drive. He's ripping on it. Lots to be said for swapping your traditionally shaped stick for something with a bit more width and volume....specially for PE surf. The ballies went to Mossels for the SA Masters this past week. Ended up with a 5th, which is good going. Some solid surf meant some solid beatings in amongst the cooking waves. Mush reckons in his one heat he had to duckdive at least 20 times. Dave decided that he didn't want his new 8ft'r turned into two 4ftr's so opted to surf his heat at Inners instead of Outers. Good plan that. Ou's are starting to get amped for the upcoming Cobbles Classic this weekend. Craig Cuff been spotted shining up his single fin. It's gonna be an awesome event, so make sure you pull in, even if it's just to soak up the vibe. Expects toes on the nose, dead cockroaches, cross steps and hang heels. Logger heaven. Some kiff new street art has livened up the car park at Something Good, with local artists Steven Carter and Joff doing some amazing work on Saturday arvo. PE's full of super talented peeps.
The weekend heralded the end of Winter and the start of Spring. Pity someone forgot to tell the weather to play ball. PE got smashed by some hectic winds, peaking at 87km/h. Obviously not much in the way of surf in the bay, but if you ventured west you coulda had some fun. The CYOH crew held the CYOH Surf Off #3 on Sunday in some pretty wild conditions. Rumour had it they had to half bury the groms in the sand so the lighties didn't get blown away. Some amazing prizes won by the guys n gals who braved the gale force winds. Some equally crazy peeps took part in the first Colour Run in PE, held at the NMMU campus. Entailed a 5k run whilst other peeps sprayed paint on you. Gotto beat a normal boring 5k run any day. Plenty ou's ended up with purple teeth, pink hair and green faces. Kiff. And if you missed the Colour Run, there's a Glow Run coming up on 16 Nov. More <here> Spring Day back in 1968 saw massive floods in PE. Still today known as THE flood. Water a metre deep in Cape Rd, and turned the Baakens into a raging torrent. It also turned the Sark River (at Humewood) into a mini-Niagara Falls, with water pouring straight over the bridge. Musta made some interesting sandbanks at Humewood for a while....that's if you could brave the sketchy water. And in other news......Liverpool kicked Man U's butt. Yes please!! Anyone missing Fergie yet??
