This will be a contest never forgotten! All who participated whether contestant or spectator will agree that something special happened this weekend. Surfing in its truest form was shared by all this contest. We were blessed with such cooking waves for the whole weekend making the judges sweat to decide who advanced and who dropped out. I have never seen so many losers of a heat still so stoked after their surf. The results truly didn’t matter, it was more a case of everyone hoping for the top 4 surfers to be in the final so that we could watch this beautiful display of old school surfing. The only problem being that there was only enough space for 4 surfers!! In the ladies final there were less than 2 points between all the contestants, with such a close result, no one really knew until the results were read out. The ladies results: 1) Shannon Bolotin (Queen of Cobbles) 2) Bernie Shelley 3) Hannah Bing 4) Susannah Leigh 5) Mia Baard In the Classics final, there was a stand out winner with his unbelievable sense of style, composure and class. Paul o Connel from Cape Town also showed the PE crowds a thing or two about old school surfing, the results were: 1) Greg Smith 2) Paul o Connel 3) Etienne Verster 4) Eddie Dumont In the open division, and seeking the title of King of Cobbles we literally watched the judges confusion as it was so close and so tight!! We had 2 x SA champ Justin Bing with all his flair, Jamie “Mr Style” Morris doing it his way, Ludi Du Toit hungry for a win in a contest suited for his classic surfing and dark horse of the contest Craig Cuff who proved why he will always be one of SA’s best! The results: 1) Ludi du Toit (King of Cobbles) 2) Justin Bing 3) Craig Cuff 4) Jamie Morris I must also make mention of 2 surfers who just missed out on the final. Dean Simpson and Greg Smith who where unbelievable to watch and when a surfer gets a heat score of 16 out of twenty and gets a third you must know how incredible the surfing was (look out for the full video coverage). VZ longest/best nose ride: Justin Bing
RVCA style of contest: Jamie Morris Surf Centre Surfers surfer of contest: Miles Gilham (who decided in the spirit of the contest to share his prize with 10 year Kye Macgregor!!) Best all round walker of the log: Dean Simpson There will be a documentary done for the event and of course a few teasers courtesy of Grant and Brad Beck, who I must add, truly represent PE surfers for what we should all be about! Final thank you to our main sponsor RVCA for all your input, O Neil for coming alongside RVCA and digging deep into their pocket to keep winners warm with new suits! Surf Centre, Red Bull, FU fins, Jack Black Beer, Pine Lodge, Friendly Stranger and New Balance for such generosity and supporting this special event. Lastly VZ for coming up with the Best/longest nose ride prize. Fun was had by all and we look forward to next years Classic. Later Gregg
