Baalie Leon Killian has a meticulous collection of old pics from back in the day, and we were stoked to be able to get scanned copies of them for the site. Fence looked pretty incredible back then, mainly due to the beach being about 800m narrower than it does today. Regular crew included Bruce Matthews, Frank Giradeau and Leon Killian.
When Leon first started surfing there weren't wetsuits, so the ou's had to suck it up and deal with the cold. Which in PE is kinda manageable (barely), but when you see them surfing places like Elands Bay on the frigid West Coast (or JBay for that matter), shew, that's respect. Back then Leon recalls having to call around town on a weekend trying to round up some guys to join you on a JBay mission....cos basically the crew ou arrived with were going to be the only guys in the water with you. Imagine that!?
Thanks Leon for a great look back into the early days of PE surfing. All you baalies out there....go scrummage through your attic & pull out some pics for us! Mail us here with your pic's.
