Home to Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Hyde Park, great nightlife, awesome restaurants, a currency that kicks the Rands ass....but bogger all surf! Ask anyone who's done their time there. You just have to learn to like sharing your break with a plethora of surf schools, and remember not to leave your kit within 200m of the water's edge - cos those tides are hectic bru! Trevor Gerhardt, an ex-Bay local who now calls it home, dropped us a mail with some pics:
"I went to Pearson High School and then UPE (Ed. - NMMU for all of you too young to remember UPE!), so surfed PE from 1988 through til 1995, until I left for Cape Town, Durban and then the UK. I’ve been here in the UK for 10 years now, and am a lecturer and course leader.
I use to surf with Pieter Visser (a body boarder who now lives in the US) and JP Visser (a paddle skier who now lives in Cape Town), which mostly which made for interesting times. We'd pull up at Secrets and 3 guys would get out, all with different boards! The water shot was taken with a disposable camera at Fence back in ’93 or ’94.
I also had quite a couple of surf trips along the coast north and south (the pic attached was one of a JBay trip with Tim Ball and Shawn Dixon).
I’ve attached a couple of pics of me surfing in the UK from Bude to Brighton."
Shot Trevor, hope the artificial reef at Brighton dishes up some waves! Glad we can keep you connected to the bay even when you thousands of miles away. Trevor dropped another email to say he just remembered he bought a Ford Escort panel van from Craig Cuff back in the day! Eish, those things were surfer vans of note.
