Sunset Surf Night Surfing Classic
Here's the comp wrap from Addie, Sunset Surf Club Chairman:
"Sunset Surf Club celebrating its 23rd anniversary this year hosted its fourth highly successful Night Surfing contest this past weekend, 2nd and 3rd December 2011 at the Pipe, Pollok Beach, Summerstrand.
The Sunset Surf Club Night Surfing Classic kicked of at 18h00 on Friday 2nd after a record of over 75 contestants in good 1m waves. As the heats progressed the crowd grew and the weather was good creating a festival atmosphere. The enthusiastic crowd was kept entertained by a dance group named Transformers resident in Bethelsdorp Extention 32 in the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth.
The appearance of spectacular dance groups, The Transformers who performed on Friday night and Spectrum and a live rock band named Sick Day September who performed on Saturday night was well received by the enthusiastic crowd who warmly welcomed and supported these side events.
The skate park was another hit with the crowds when BMXers, Inline skaters and skateboarders demonstrated their extreme talents at various intervals on Saturday from the afternoon into the night.
There were outstanding individual performers by Bertie Stuurman who scored a high 9.5 on one of his waves, he won the Fairplay trophy and Bruce Cambell who won all his heats and the Sportsmanship trophy. The Sunset Surf Club Night Surfing Classic serves as a bonding factor between surfers from various cultures and backgrounds and has improved in leaps and bounds over the past three years. It is a fantastic event for up and coming surfers, great surf and equal competition.
This year, in addition to the surfing contest and beach activities being the paddle battle and flag races (beach sprints), Beachwear fashion show and the kiddies jumping castle, the club took the bold step in adding a few side events in order to create a festival atmosphere such as the Open stage (for singers, dancers and bands to pitch up and perform), the skate park (for BMX, Inline skating and skateboarding) enthusiasts to showcase their talents.
The Sunset Surf Club Night Surfing Classic has built up a reputation for its ability to encompass the essence of fun, friendship and surf as well as being the stepping stone for many talented young surfers. It is also the only opportunity the surfers will have to participate in a night surfing event as this is the only one of its kind in South Africa which the club is proud to host each year."
Shot to Sunset Surf for holding such a cool event!
