Peter McAinsh
I learned to surf in PE and Port Alfred, the Mee brothers (now in NZ) taught me the basics and looking back I realise what good lessons they taught me. They had me out in 10 foot surf telling me it is only 5 foot and don't be such a wuss.
I left PE in '83 and ended up in the Kei for several years before leaving for Oz where I lived for another ten years or so surfing Maroubra in Sydney mostly. Then a stint in Taiwan, the surf gets really good there during the typhoon season. That's where the pic's were taken. Somewhere on the east coast.
We did six years in Taiwan then moved to the Sudan for work opportunities three years ago and still here. It is hot, no surf at all but I get to fly home for two months (June and July) and surf myself silly then so it isn't so terrible.
I miss the 'con (Rincon) though and often dream of the waves off the beacon that I have had. Never forget a day in ‘83 when it was breaking from well other side of the beacon right through to Black Bottoms, longest rides of my life and only three of us surfing it while there were 30 odd ou's surfing vlam pipe watching us get these outrageous long rides...ah, PE surfers, a different bunch.
The video was shot at 'Palm Point' a sick left hander breaking over razor sharp volcanic rock. Two busloads of taiwanese beginners rocked up. Small like this it was positively dangerous, even for experienced surfers. As it gets bigger it breaks in deeper water, add twenty complete kooks on longboards...we were laughing so hard we missed some of the better wipe outs, one wave twenty of them all fell off doing frog face plants. Oh my...
Thanks Pete!
