Peter McAinsh

Peter first got in touch to say he was stoked with the site, and suggested the addition of a Forum's page. He also had a bit of a dig about the Home page banner image being one of 2 ft Millers, instead of a shot of it cranking. He's obviously been away from PE a bit too long, and has forgotten that cranking surf and lekker sunny days (ie nice for photo's) don't tend to happen at the same time here! Nice day, no surf. Kak day, good surf! Take it away Pete....

Who said Taiwan doesn't get waves?

Cutting back into the pocket

I learned to surf in PE and Port Alfred, the Mee brothers (now in NZ) taught me the basics and looking back I realise what good lessons they taught me. They had me out in 10 foot surf telling me it is only 5 foot and don't be such a wuss.

I left PE in '83 and ended up in the Kei for several years before leaving for Oz where I lived for another ten years or so surfing Maroubra in Sydney mostly. Then a stint in Taiwan, the surf gets really good there during the typhoon season. That's where the pic's were taken. Somewhere on the east coast.

We did six years in Taiwan then moved to the Sudan for work opportunities three years ago and still here. It is hot, no surf at all but I get to fly home for two months (June and July) and surf myself silly then so it isn't so terrible.

I miss the 'con (Rincon) though and often dream of the waves off the beacon that I have had. Never forget a day in ‘83 when it was breaking from well other side of the beacon right through to Black Bottoms, longest rides of my life and only three of us surfing it while there were 30 odd ou's surfing vlam pipe watching us get these outrageous long rides...ah, PE surfers, a different bunch.

The video was shot at 'Palm Point' a sick left hander breaking over razor sharp volcanic rock. Two busloads of taiwanese beginners rocked up. Small like this it was positively dangerous, even for experienced surfers. As it gets bigger it breaks in deeper water, add twenty complete kooks on longboards...we were laughing so hard we missed some of the better wipe outs, one wave twenty of them all fell off doing frog face plants. Oh my...

Thanks Pete!

For all you non-geography major's out there, Sudan is in NE Africa. It has a small stretch of coast line on the Red Sea, and is bordered on the north by Egypt and the east by Ethiopia. It's the largest country in Africa, and the 10th largest in the world by area. Now when you win Trivial Pursuit, remember to credit Millerslocal right.
