Behind the lens....with Greg Betts

Greg from Action Exposed recently did an interview with Beachwatch, who kindly let us reproduce it here.
Tell us a bit about yourself.

Photography is one of my many passions in life…along with my love for the great outdoors, adventure water sports, my beautiful family and of course good music.  I’m currently a freelance photographer based in the Friendly City of Port Elizabeth.  Starting out as a nature photographer with a special interest in bird life, I acquired an appreciation for that which is peaceful & free – a beauty & spirit that seemed to inspire my passions for new photographic horizons.  I have a big crush on the ocean as it has always been a part of my life.  Whether snorkelling, scuba diving, surfing or windsurfing….out in the water is where I’m smiling.  It all made perfect sense and naturally my love for the ocean, sport and photography could be rolled into one awesome privilege and pleasure.

When did you first discover an interest in photography?

Since I can remember, photography has always been of interest to me.  I believe a picture tells a thousand words.

Picture
How would you describe your work, or what you try to capture in your work?

I aim to capture the core of the action and those who skilfully manipulate the power and energy of the ocean in taking water sports to new levels.  I also try to capture the unseen – in the water things evolve so fast that one often overlooks/misses that one sweet moment in time.  Photographing water is simply magical –it adds an extra dimension of movement, sparkle, and shape.

What photography equipment do you use when shooting the waves?

My photography kit consists of a homebuilt housing with a Canon D20 and an 18 -55 mm lens.  For video footage I use a Sony CX115 HD handy cam in dedicated housing.
Picture
Do you prefer shoot from land or in the water?

K@K question …with no doubt I prefer shooting in the water.  It’s all adrenaline!  This gives the viewer a completely different perspective –exhilarating angles-action filled frames-up close and personal.

Picture
What or who inspires your photography?

The ocean’s free spirit & serene beauty.  Nature’s unpredictable power and energy.  The artistic  talent displayed by sportsman in the water.

Picture
What is or has been your favourite surf shoot location?

They are all great.  Any location that has water is a thumbs up.

Picture
Where can one go to see your work and/or purchase prints?

You can check out my Website
www.actionexposed.co.za

Picture
Which surfer or surf event would you love to shoot?

My Dream is to shoot the Billabong Pro surfing in Tahiti, and the windsurfing in Maui

Picture
What is your advice for new amateur photographers who are just starting out?

Love the ocean – persevere, your passion will always stay true and see you through to the other side.  Brave those exciting angles –get in the water and have fun!
