EP Surfers dominate Rip Curl Mossel Bay
Louisa Lightfoot provided us with contest wrap and results for the Rip Curl comp in Mossel Bay recently:
6 EP Surfer in the finals out of the 16 finalists!!
The Ripcurl final event of three was held in small, but contestable surf in Mossel Bay this weekend. As the surf was on the small side an unusual call was made to surf the contest at outerpool rather than the normal innerpool contest site of the past. Mossel Bay being a lovely site for the contest drew quite a crowd with two days of contestable waves and lovely weather.
The oldest U16 age group had an early upset with two of the top surfers DyranZakarian and Josh Smith being knocked out in quarter final. Josh Smith, at the beginning of this contest, was holding the lead for the winner of the series, with the prize being a trip to Bells Beach in Australia to take part in the U16 Ripcurl final. Dylan Lightfoot was closely on his heels and with Smith knocked out in the Quarters left Lightfoot only needing a third in the contest to bag the big prize.
Lightfoot was left in the final with two u14 and one u16 and himself. A tightly contested final left Lightfoot taking the win and bagging the major prize.
The girls were strongly contested with the Eastern Cape duo of Gina Smith and Tahra Uren fighting it out in the final. Gina getting a lovely top scoring ride, which put her ahead of Tahra coming a close second place. Smith won the overall Ripcurl series winning in Cape Town and Mossel Bay and having an overall very successful year this year.
The U12 and U 14 divisions were won by a very talented Aiden Masenkamp from Cape Town. Matt McGillivray and Aiden fought it out in a very strongly contested U14 division but it seemed mother nature was insistent on providing the winning waves toMasenkamp. The Eastern Cape was however strongly present in these two age groups as well with Jeffreys Bay Jerry Van Wyk and Jose Faulkner making to the finals.
